Worth Hippensteel Hare, Sr., 91, passed peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, September 29, 2013, in his home in Edenton, NC. Born January 3, 1922 in Chowan County to the late Brady Clarence and Sarah Roach Hare, he was a World War II veteran, having served both as an enlisted soldier in the US Army National Guard and as a Seabee in the US Navy in Okinawa, Japan. He was a born again Christian, a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, the Advance Ruritan Club, the Edward G. Bond Post #40 of the American Legion, the NC House Movers Association, and the International Structural Movers Association. After returning from the war in 1945, Mr. Hare spent his early career farming with his family in Edenton and Winfall. As a result of the 1962 Ash Wednesday Storm that battered the coast of North Carolina, he began Worth H. Hare and Son House Moving, which he operated until his retirement in 1987. An avid collector of antique horse-drawn farm equipment and carriages, he enjoyed traveling cross-country and smoking cigars. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 43 years, Elsie Hassell Hare, his second daughter, Sandra Hare Vail, and by his six brothers and sisters. A loving and dedicated husband to his wife of 28 years, Sallie Overton Layton Hare, he is also survived by his loving children, Gail Hare Singh of Edenton, Iris Hare Olmstead (Allen Frank Olmstead) of New Bern, Salli Hare of Winterville, Worth H. Hare, Jr. (Dawn Dozier Hare) of Edenton, and Kim Goodwin (Joseph Goodwin), also of Edenton. Mr. Hare was adored by his 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Grandpoppy" and "Pops". He is also survived by his wife Sallie's sons, R.H., Dennis, and Brent Layton and their families. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in Macedonia Baptist Church by the Rev. Bob Young. It will be followed by a horse-drawn hearse procession to Beaver Hill Cemetery for the graveside rites with military honors. Friends may join the family Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and other times at the residence.
