Garland Courtney Jennings, Sr., 75, of 1824 Belvidere Road, Belvidere, NC, died Wednesday, October 2, 2013 in his home. Mr. Jennings was born in Richmond, VA and was the son of the late Murrill Thaxton Jennings and Alva Rowuvenia Jones Clarke. Retired as an Aviation Machinist's Mate (Jet Engine Mechanic) Chief Petty Officer from the US Navy after 20 years of service, he had also been employed and retired as a mechanic from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, and had also enjoyed membership in both the William Paul Stallings Post #126 of the American Legion and the Chickahominy Indian Tribe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Alvin B. Clarke, Jr., and a sister, Lois Ann Perrin. Surviving are his wife of nearly 57 years, Lucy Perry Jennings; a daughter, Alice Louise Jennings of Rockledge, FL; three sons, Garland C. "G.C." Jennings, Jr. and wife Cynthia of Edenton, Merrill Thaxton Jennings and wife Lawonda of Hobbsville, and John Thomas Jennings and wife Michelle of Melbourne, FL; a brother, Alvin B. Clarke, III of Sandston, VA; six grandchildren, Hope Swinney, Jeremy Jennings, David and Paul Owens, and John and Lauren Jennings; and three great-grandchildren, Ruth and Wyatt Swinney and Jocelyn Jennings. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, by the Rev. Bruce Johnson. Burial with military honors will follow in the Copeland Family Cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
