Virginia Chappell Winslow, 101, of 1234 Belvidere Road, Belvidere, NC, passed away on Thursday, October 10, 2013 in Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation, Hertford. Mrs. Winslow was born in Perquimans County and was the daughter of the late Norman and Lizzie Chappell. A homemaker, she was a faithful member of Piney Woods Friends Meeting where she had served as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, Recording Clerk for the Monthly Meeting, had been active in the Bertha White Women's Missionary Circle, and throughout the years had served on many of the Meeting House committees. Other enjoyments included the Perquimans County Quilters Association, the Belvidere Home Demonstration Club, and an active interest in the restoration and preservation of the Newbold-White House. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Claude Winslow; an infant son, Claude Donald Winslow; her daughter, Avis Winslow Layden; brothers, Louis and Gaither Chappell; and her sister, Eunice Cale. Surviving are her son, Preston Winslow and wife Becky of Wilmington; her son-in-law, James Oliver "Teny" Layden of Belvidere; her sister, Orene Jordan of Greenville; seven grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Piney Woods Friends Meeting by Pastors Joseph Kirby and Ken Spivey. Burial will follow in Up River Cemetery. Friends may join the family Saturday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and other times at the residence. Flowers are welcomed, or contributions in her memory may be made to either Piney Woods Friends Meeting, or to the Belvidere-Chappell Hill Volunteer Fire Dept., both in Belvidere, NC 27919.
