Calvin Coolidge Godfrey, 89, of 1833 New Hope Road, Hertford, NC, died Sunday, November 17, 2013 in his home. Mr. Godfrey was born in Perquimans County and was the son of the late John Thomas, Sr. and Mary Russell Godfrey. A life long farmer, he attended Berea Church of Christ. An Army veteran of World War II, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his acts of heroism, and was a member of both the William Paul Stallings Post 126 of the American Legion and the William Clarence Jackson Post 6060 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Elliott, five brothers, J.T., Jr., Braxton, Norman, James, and Ray Godfrey, and a son-in-law, Ray Cullipher. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Lizzie Hunter Godfrey; three daughters, Mary G. Cullipher of Hertford, Brinda G. Jones and husband Steve of Daytona Beach, FL, and Anna G. Black and husband Austin of Elizabeth City; a son, Vance Godfrey and wife Karen of Elizabeth City; two sisters, Aby Nixon of Edenton and Sophia Schaeffer of La Plata, MD; two brothers, George Godfrey of San Francisco, CA and Hazel Godfrey of Virginia Beach, VA; nine grandchildren, all of whom lovingly called him "Paw Paw", Christina Jakey, Natalie Tremblay, Kimberly Cullipher, Jonathan Tremblay, Keith Cullipher, Heather Gaddis, Ethan Winslow, Tyler Winslow, and Addison Black; nine great-grandchildren: and two very special friends, Russell Jones and Dorsey Johr. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford. Burial with military honors will follow in the Godfrey Family Cemetery. Friends may join the family Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home, and other times at the home of his daughter, Mary Cullipher, 1825 New Hope Road, Hertford.
