Lattie Mae Phelps Spear, 88, of 341 Mexico Road, Edenton, NC, died Monday, December 23, 2013 in her home. Mrs. Spear was born in Washington County and was the daughter of the late Harrison and Melissa Davenport Phelps. A hairdresser, she owned and operated Lattie Mae's Beauty Salon for over 50 years, was a member of Countryside Church of Christ, and a former member and Sunday School teacher at Cape Colony Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde William Spear, Sr.; a sister, Irene Jennings; and by brothers, Dennis and Dell Phelps. Surviving are three daughters, Laneta Spear Banks and husband Charles of Hertford, Phyllis Ann Spear and Jackie Spear, both of Edenton; two sons, Clyde William Spear, Jr. of Wilmington and Michael K. Spear of Edenton; four grandchildren, Cyndi Copeland and husband Alvin, Melvin Williams, Jr. and wife Monica, Jordan Spear and wife Leigh, and Meredith Spear; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Philippi Church of Christ by Pastors Daniel Davenport and Bob Brock. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton. On Friday they will greet friends in the church the hour prior to services, and again immediately following the graveside rites. All other times they will be at the residence.
