Alva Ray Bunch, 84, of 182 Lyons Lane, Hertford, NC, died Saturday, December 28, 2013 in his home. Mr. Bunch was born in Chowan County and was the son of the late Lonnie and Gertrude Bass Bunch. Retired from the Department of Motor Vehicles after 20 years of employment, he later worked as a commercial fisherman for many years. A member of both Hertford United Methodist Church and the Association of Retired State Employees, he had also served in the North Carolina National Guard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne Speight Bunch, a sister, Edith Drick, and a brother, Milton Bunch. Surviving are his daughter, Susan Chappell and husband Larry; a son, Lonnie Bunch and wife Monica, all of Hertford; two brothers, Donald Bunch of Hertford and Fay Bunch of St. Augustine, FL; six grandchildren, Angel, Julie, Lonnie, Jr., John, Stephen, and Brian; and 18 great-grandchildren. Graveside memorial services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton, by the Rev. Larry Bowden. Friends may join the family at the residence.
