Marvin Lewis Evans

Marvin Lewis Evans, 93, of 3332 Rocky Hock Road, Edenton, NC, died Friday, February 7, 2014 in his home. Mr. Evans was born in Chowan County on Nov. 4, 1920, and was the son of the late Zachariah Trotman and Effie Louise White Evans. A farmer, he was a member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church and its Carey Evans Sunday School Class, had served on the Chowan County Board of Education during the 1960's, had served on the boards of the Farmer's Home Administration (9 years), and the Farm Service Agency (11 years), and was the last surviving charter member of the Center Hill-Crossroads Fire Dept. where he served for 45 years. An Army veteran of World War II where he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre, he served from 1944 to 1946. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Clara Mae Byrum Evans; sisters, Lillie Saunders, Lonie Harrell, Pearl Harrell and Beulah Williams; brothers, Carey, Edward, Roland, Milton, and Alvin Evans; and by a great-grandson, Christopher Carter Evans. Surviving are two daughters, Judy Evans Hollowell and husband Baker of Newport News, VA and Janie Evans Bass and husband Tom of Virginia Beach; four sons, Leon Evans and wife Joyce, Don Evans, and Jimmy Evans, all of Edenton; and Lewis Evans and wife Reva of Wadesboro; two sisters, Eleanor Byrum of Tyner and Helen Lowe of Suffolk, VA; his special friend, Anna May Sager of Edenton; 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. in Rocky Hock Baptist Church by Dr. James Horton and Pastor Tracy Smith. Burial with military and fireman honors will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and other times at the residence. Memorial contributions may be made to either the building fund of Rocky Hock Baptist Church, 113 Rocky Hock Church Road, Edenton, NC 27932, or to the Center Hill-Crossroads Fire Dept., P.O.
