Chrystal Haste Towe

On Thursday February 20, 2014, Chrystal Haste Towe, 77, of 340 Winfall Blvd., Hertford, NC, passed away quietly with her family close at hand. Born March 23, 1936, in Chowan County, she was the daughter of the late T. Erie, Sr. and Nezzie Perry Haste. She was the cherished wife of Clifford for over 55 years, the beloved mother to Suzy, Tosh, Elizabeth, and Payte, and the loving grandmother to McCartney, Courtney, and Inglis. Also surviving are Elizabeth's husband, Brian Beatty, Tosh's wife, Elizabeth Potts, Payte's wife, Caroline Pearson, Chrystal's brother and sister, T. Erie Haste, Jr. and Faye Lewis; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Chrystal's first calling was as wife and mother. However, her unique ability to see a need, and ensure that need was met, inspired her to pursue a career in Social Service, where she served as Director of the Perquimans County Department of Social Services for over 20 years. She received an Associate's Degree from Greensboro Women's College, and after many years of raising a family, and while working for the county, Chrystal went back to school in 1987 at the age of 51. Perseverance and determination were her watch words and she received her BS in Social Service from Elizabeth City State University in 2000. A member of Hertford United Methodist Church, she served on the Board of Directors for The Open Door of Perquimans County. Her other passions were creative. She loved to knit, quilt, and sew. Her works of art are beautifully worn or proudly displayed by many family members and friends. Chrystal's genteel smile and soft countenance will be missed by all who were blessed to know her. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in the family cemetery at the home and will be officiated by The Reverend John H. Bonner, III. Visitation for family and friends will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Open Door of Perquimans County, P.O. Box 721, Hertford, NC 27944.
