William Clarence Bass, 96, of 522 Evans-Bass Road, Edenton, NC, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014 in Vidant Chowan Hospital, Edenton. Mr. Bass was born in Chowan County on November 28, 1917, and was the son of the late William Turner and Hettie Pearce Bass. Retired from Edenton Construction Company, he was a member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and been a member of the Carey Evans Sunday School Class, was an honorary member of the Rocky Hock Ruritan Club and had been a member and past president of the Chowan Ruritan Club, had worked in Gideons International, and in years past had made several trips with his wife and others to West Virginia and other areas to build churches. An Army Air Force Veteran of World War II, he had served in the Pacific Theatre. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Louise Byrum Bass, a son-in-law, James Morgan, an infant sister, and older sisters, Ila Bass and Nelia Smith. Surviving are three daughters, Nancy B. Morgan, Emily B. Byrum and husband Butch, and Lou Ann B. Elliott and husband Billy, all of Edenton; a son, William Thomas Bass and wife Janie of Virginia Beach, VA; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Rocky Hock Baptist Church by Dr. James Horton. Burial with military honors will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery.
