Charles Augustus Perry, 81, of 2105 New Hope Road, Hertford, NC, passed away on Monday, March 24, 2014 in Currituck House. He was diagnosed with dementia two years ago. Born and raised in the Bear Swamp community of Perquimans County on December 12, 1932, he was the son of the late Clinton Augustus and Viola Joliff Perry. A farmer in his earlier years, he also operated a rolling store in the 1950s and 1960s throughout Perquimans County, before beginning a career as an equipment operator with the North Carolina Dept. of Transportation from where he retired. An avid coon, deer, and fox hunter, he loved fishing, cooking, gardening, and watching old western TV shows. A member of the Bear Swamp, Turn Me Loose, and New Hope Hunting Clubs, he was known as "Coon Hunter". As a child he attended Great Hope Baptist Church, but for many years he had been a member of New Hope United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Shelton, and by his sister, Catherine Layden, (formerly of Great Bridge, VA). Surviving are his dear friend, Yvonne Sawyer of Hertford; the mother of his children, Sarah Meadows of New Hope; five children, Henry Perry and wife Faye of High Point, Martin Perry and wife Lynn, and Danny Perry and wife Cathy, all of New Hope, Tony Perry and wife Linda and Elizabeth Dianne McGuire and husband Sean, all of Camden; 13 grandchildren, Matthew Perry and wife Brandie of High Point, Justin Perry of New Hope, Kristin Stokes and husband Mike of Elizabeth City, Lee Whitehead and wife Georgina of Cambridge, UK, Carrie Whitehead of Elizabeth City, Jessica Whitehead of Winfall, Holly Lassiter and husband R.J. of Belvidere, Ben Benton of South Mills, Amy Alcocer and husband Josh of Elizabeth City, Cameron and Courtney Perry of Camden, and Taylor and Tyler McGuire of Camden; and 11 great-grandchildren, Hannah Stokes, Arianna Martin, Marshall Davenport, Breanna and Sophia Marshall, Madison Davenport, Isabella Elliott, Jada and Jack Lassiter, and Juliette and Alexander Alcocer. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:00 p.m. in New Hope United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bill Masciangelo. Burial will follow in Great Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and all other times at his residence on New Hope Road.
