Mary Grey Byrum Leary, 87, of 209 S. Granville Street, Edenton, NC, died Sunday, March 30, 2014 in her home. Mrs. Leary was born in Chowan County on August 30, 1926, and was the daughter of the late Cecil Edwin and Lillie Satterfield Byrum. The retired secretary/treasurer of the former Leary Oil Company, she was a member of Edenton Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Edward Leary; her sister, Annie Macon "Makie" Byrum Perkins and husband John, a half-sister, Gladys Henderson, and a half-brother, John L. Byrum and wife Alma. Surviving are her children, daughter, Anne Leary Parrish and husband J.M., and son, Stephen Leary and friend Beverley, all of Edenton; three grandchildren, Jim Parrish and wife Chrystal of Edenton, Grey Parrish Tipton and husband John of Winterville, and Sarah Leary of Greenville; and three great-grandchildren, Jimbo and Emma Parrish, and Chess Tipton. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in Edenton Baptist Church by the Rev. David Brooks. Friends may join the family for a reception in the social hall of the church immediately following the service on Tuesday, and all other times at her residence. Graveside rites will follow the reception and will be held in Beaver Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Edenton Baptist Church, 200 S. Granville Street, or to Shepard Pruden Memorial Library, 106 W. Water Street, both in Edenton, NC 27932.
