Charlie Alton Johnson

Charlie Alton "Tiny" Johnson, 71, of 1154 NC Hwy 343 North, South Mills, NC, died Monday, April 28, 2014 in Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, Chesapeake, VA. Mr. Johnson was born in Camden County and was the son of Hilda Mae Sawyer Johnson Mills of South Mills and the late Charlie Phelps Johnson. A retired civilian employee of Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 20 years of employment, he had also later retired from the United States Coast Guard Base in Elizabeth City with more than 14 years of service. He was a member of both Ebenezer Baptist Church and South Mills Ruritan Club. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Umphlett Johnson, and a brother, Eugene Johnson. Surviving along with his mother are his son, Michael Alton Johnson and wife Lendy of Wake Forest; and his grand-dog, Dixie Lou. A gathering for family and friends will be held Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Ebenezer Baptist Church. Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, assisted the family with the cremation arrangements.
