Hal Askew Byrum, 77, of 187 Tranquility Lane, Hertford, NC, died Friday, May 16, 2014 in his home. Mr. Byrum was born in Bertie County and was the son of the late William Benjamin Byrum, III and Retha Askew Mizelle. Retired as vice-president and manager from the former Don Juan Manufacturing Company in Hertford, he had been employed part-time for the past six years with Sears. A Methodist by faith, he was a charter member of the Tar River-Greenville Chapter of the US Power Squadron, was a member of the Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce where he had served as president, and had also served on the board of directors of Centura Bank. A veteran, he had served in the US Air Force. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Rose Enterline. Surviving are his wife of nearly 27 years, Marjorie Lane Byrum; a son, Stephen Byrum and wife Brenda of Richmond, VA; a step-son, Robby Goodwin of Hertford; a sister, Phoebe Strough of Bronson, FL; a brother, Carlton Byrum of Archer, FL; two grandchildren, Melissa Watson and Patrick Byrum; a step-granddaughter, Crystal Goodwin; and a step-great-granddaughter, Jordan Stokely. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, by the Rev. Gene Boyce. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the service on Wednesday, and other times at the residence.
