Mayward Herbert Chappell

Mayward Herbert Chappell, 84, of 447 Gliden Road, Hobbsville, NC, died Wednesday, June 11, 2014 in Chowan River Nursing & Rehabilitation, Edenton. Mr. Chappell was born in Chowan County on May 12, 1930, and was the son of the late Herbert James and Sarah Bunch Chappell. A retired farmer, he had also retired from Union Camp Corp. in Franklin, VA after working in the roll finishing dept. for 30 years. A member of Warwick Baptist Church and its Adult Men's Sunday School Class, he also enjoyed membership in the Edward G. Bond Post #40 of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Ryland Ruritan Club. An Army veteran of the Korean War, he had received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, and a Combat Medical Badge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Geneva Chappell (Louis), and Margie Wood (John Elmer, Jr.), and by brothers, Edward Chappell (Sybil) and Wallace Chappell (Dorrie Mae). Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Rita Hollowell Chappell; two sons, Dennis Chappell and wife Joy of Hobbsville and Raymond Chappell and wife Sallie of Edenton; a sister, Beulah Phthisic (McCoy) of Tyner; three grandchildren, Heath Chappell and wife Amy of Edenton, Roxanne Gray and husband Jim of St. Croix, VI, and Chloe Chappell of Edenton; and twin great-grandsons, Bowen and Wyatt Chappell. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Warwick Baptist Church by the Revs. Frank Ellington and Gene Asbill. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
