Ivan Samuel Squires, 77, of 142 West Island Trail, Hertford, NC, died Saturday, July 19, 2014 in his home. Mr. Squires was born in Orange County, NC on September 30, 1936, and was the son of the late Samuel Clyde and Annie Elizabeth Baker Squires. A retired Chief Petty Officer (EMCDV1) from the United States Navy with 23 years of service, he had later retired as a crane operator/electrician, etc from Norfolk Dredging Company after 18 years of employment. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Squires Bobba, and two brothers, Edward "Moose" Squires and Andrew Squires. Surviving are his wife of nearly 55 years, Carol Jane Kneifl Squires; two daughters, Diane Carol Cornell (Nathan) of Bethesda, MD and Dawn Eileen Mary Dotson (Virgil) of Harpers Ferry, WV; two sons, David Ivan Squires (Wanda) of Kill Devil Hills and Donald Wayne Squires (Ann) of Richmond, VA; a sister, Nancy S. Tempesta; a brother, John W. Squires (Donna), both of Chapel Hill; and five grandchildren, Christopher (Melanie), Amanda (Elijah), Austin, Ryan, and Alex. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in Evangelical Methodist Church, Elizabeth City. Military honors will be accorded in the church. Friends may join the family in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, Hertford, assisted the family with the cremation arrangements. The family asks that flowers be omitted and contributions in his memory be made to either Evangelical Methodist Church, 820 Old Okisko Road, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or to The Christian Broadcasting Network, 700 Club, 977 Centerville Turnpike, Virginia Beach, VA 23463-0001.
