Hazel Mae Smith Pierce, 91, of 1270 Ocean Highway, Hertford, NC, died Saturday, August 2, 2014. Mrs. Pierce was born in Perquimans County on September 4, 1922, and was the daughter of the late Roscoe and Mollie Harrell Smith. A homemaker and life-long member of Woodland United Methodist Church, she had also formerly worked for 17 years at Don Juan Manufacturing Company. Devoted to her family, she loved to cook, sew, grow beautiful flowers, and enjoyed working in her vegetable garden. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Pierce, and by her brother, Matthew Smith. Surviving are her daughter, Annette Pierce Corprew and husband Larry Corprew; her son, James R. "Bud" Pierce and wife Susan Brothers Pierce; a grandson, Wayne Corprew and children Anthony Corprew and Eileen Corprew, a grandson, Kendall Pierce and wife Stacy Colson Pierce and children Kenny Pierce and Calvin Pierce; and by her brother, Benjamin Smith, all of Hertford. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be officiated by the Rev. Toni Wood and the Rev. Bob Brock. A private burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the chapel service, and all other times at her residence.
