John Henry Holland

John Henry Holland, 82, of Albemarle Plantation, Hertford, NC, died Friday, August 1, 2014 in home. He had moved to Hertford from Chadds Ford, PA and Cape May, NJ. Mr. Holland was born in Pittsburgh, PA on June 19, 1932 and was the son of the late George Fleming Smith Holland and Dorothy Liske Holland. A 1954 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania business school where he played football with "The Mungermen", a reference to the great football years of under Coach George Munger, he received his Master's Degree in Food Science from Cornell University in 1961. He was an Army veteran, and later his business career included 35 years in marketing and sales with Scott Paper Company, (now Kimberly Clark), retiring in 1988, and then in a consulting partnership with Senior Marketing Partners working with the food and grocery industry until 1993. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Faith Weaver Holland, whom he married on August 6, 1955; children, Jeffrey P. Holland of Boulder, CO, Joy S. Holland of Chalfont, PA, Joel A. Holland of Denver, CO, and Jason B. Holland of Prague, Czech Republic; six grandchildren, Justin, Jonathan, Jordan, Julia, Jarrett, and Dora; and two great-grandchildren, Emma and Mason. He was the proud recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award at Hertford Central Elementary School where he worked for many years with teachers and children in the classroom, giving his time and attention to each child who needed help. Devoted to his family, he will be remembered and missed beyond any words they can express, though a son summed it all up this way, "The lessons he taught us all will live on through us, and the effect we have on others". A private memorial service will be held later when the family gathers for burial in Concordville, PA.
