Elmer Stewart Van Anden, Sr., 74, of Belvidere, NC, died Friday, August 22, 2014 in Vidant Chowan Hospital, Edenton. Mr. Van Anden was born in Putnam County, NY on July 26, 1940 and was the son of the late Sylvanus and Margaret Barrett Van Anden. Employed as a plumber and electrician for many years, he was a life-time member of both Hopewell Hose Volunteer Fire Department in Hopewell Junction, NY and Sylvan Grange in Stormville, NY, was a member of Hopewell Reformed Church and the William Paul Stallings Post 126 of the American Legion. A veteran, he had served in the US Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Douglas Van Anden. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Theresa Hughes Van Anden; two daughters, Michelle Van Anden of Belvidere and Terri Lynn Mullins and husband Thomas of Hattieville, AR; two sons, Elmer Van Anden, Jr. and wife Robin of Highland, NY and Michael Van Anden of Niagara Falls, NY; 10 grandchildren, James, Ashley, Michael Anthony, Michael David, Alexis, Christopher, Robert, Brittney, Isaac, and Dylan; and one great-granddaughter, Melody. A gathering for friends and family will be held Tuesday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford. Funeral services will be held in New York later in the week.
