William Alphonsus "Bill" Ryan, 95, of 213 East Eden Street, Edenton, NC, died Saturday, August 30, 2014 in his home. Mr. Ryan was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 30, 1919 and was the son of the late Thomas and Greta Todd Ryan. A graduate of St. John's University School of Law in New York, he was a retired attorney having practiced law in Huntington, NY for nearly 40 years. Throughout his career it was his passion to maintain a high level of ethical standards with whomever he served. For many years he was also active with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in which he offered his legal services pro bono to those in need. A member of both St. Anne Catholic Church and the Edward G. Bond Post 40 of the American Legion, he was a veteran of the US Army Air Corps having served during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Josephine Ryan, his brother, Matthew Ryan, and his son, Stephen Ryan. Surviving are his wife of nearly 28 years, Diana Ryan; two daughters, Deirdre Davis and husband Jeffrey and Alison Anderson and husband Paul; six sons, Thomas Ryan and wife Nancy, Patrick Ryan, Kevin Ryan and wife Laurie, Steven Hinson and wife Elyse, Gary Hinson, and Mark Hinson and wife Bonnie; a beloved daughter-in-law, Mary Ryan; and 14 grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be held Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in the parish hall of St. Anne Catholic Church by the Rev. William L. Pitts. Friends may join the family Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. for a time of visitation which will be immediately followed by a prayer service in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton.
