Charles Henry Ward

Charles Henry Ward, 76, of 159 Halsey Bay Road, Hertford, NC, passed away quietly with his loving family by his side on Monday, September 1, 2014 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and began his eternal life in the joys of Heaven. Mr. Ward was born in Perquimans County on January 13, 1938 and was the son of the late Charles Richard and Lula Mae Mansfield Ward. A businessman, he was the president of Tarheel Cotton in Merry Hill, Ward & Nixon Cotton Gin in Winfall, and K & W, Charles H. Ward, Inc., and MCS, Inc., all in Hertford. A member and trustee of Bethel Baptist Church, he also currently served on the Board of Trustees of The College of the Albemarle. Past involvements included service as chairman of the Perquimans County Land Fill, a 20 year stint on the Perquimans County Board of Commissioners, membership on the Northeast Commission, the Albemarle Hospital Board, the North Carolina Board of Transportation under Gov. Jim Hunt, The Albemarle District Jail Board, Chairman of the Albemarle Commission, and service as Governor of the Albemarle District Ruritans. The meetings and time spent on these boards and committees were his pleasure, and expressed his deep love for Perquimans County and its people. For these years of service Mr. Ward was awarded The Order of The Long Leaf Pine in 2001. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Pete Ward. Surviving are his wife, Alice Jeanne Jackson Ward; daughters, Darlene Prevish and husband Don of Williamsburg, VA and Sharon Bochman and husband Dan of Poquoson, VA; step-children, Erwin Hudson and wife Becky of Centennial, CO, Ron Hudson of Elizabeth City, and Don Hudson and wife Gwen, Mark Winslow and wife Lynn, Michael "Money" Winslow and wife Michelle, and Matt Winslow and wife Dee, all of Hertford. Together Charles and Alice Jeanne shared 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Katherine Ann Winslow and husband Lawrence of Belvidere and Mary Lee Willis and husband Larry of Windsor, VA; three brothers, Jim Ward and wife Betty of Edenton, Tom Ward and wife Margie of Sunbury, and Wayne Ward and wife Sherry of Hertford; and a sister-in-law, Gloria Ashley and husband Marvin of Edenton. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Tracy Smith and Chaplain Corbin Cherry. A private burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and other times at the residence.
