Thurman Owens

Thurman Owens, 86, of Dallie White Road, Tyner, NC, passed away on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 in his home. Mr. Owens was born in Pitt County on March 3, 1928, and was the son of the late Bunk and Bertie Owens. A retired trim carpenter, he was a member of The Loyal Order of the Moose, and of Parkview Church of God in Newport News. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Magdalene, Alice, and Jean, and by five brothers, Freeman, Robert Lee, Cecil, Thomas, Jr., and Hubert Earl. Surviving are his wife, Louise K. Owens; daughters, Frances O. Wagner and husband Richard of Vero Beach, FL and Carolyn O. "Cricket" Tatem and husband Mike of Tyner; his son, Thurman Ray Owens and wife Susie of Hampton, VA; four grandsons, Chris Wagner of Rochester, NH, Eric Wagner and wife Chrissy of Clayton, Joseph Owens and wife Jennifer of Newport News, VA and Nick Tatem of Tyner; three granddaughters, Amber Hatcher and husband Brian of Newport News, Ashleigh Owens of Hampton, and Kristie Tatem of Edenton; eight great-grandchildren, Jacob Wagner, Ryan Owens, Braxton Hatcher, Marley Owens, and Megahn, Corey, Ella, and Jensen Tatem; three sisters, Rachel Glenn (late husband Roger) of Chapel Hill, Louise Gardner and husband Carlton of Fountain, and Ann Webb and husband Ralph "Skip" of Elm City; three brothers, Kinchen Owens and wife Eva of La Grange, Linwood Owens and wife Ann of Windsor, VA, and Bobby "Bob" Owens and wife Karen of Newport News; his best friend, "Buttons", and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. A graveside service will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in Parklawn Memorial Park, 2551 North Armistead Ave., Hampton, VA by Pastor Mark Hambrick. Friends may join the family Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and other times at the residence.
