H. McKay Phthisic, Jr.

Haywood McKay Phthisic, Jr., 82, of 798 Hickory Cross Road, Belvidere, NC, died peacefully at home on Saturday, November 8, 2014 following a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Mr. Phthisic was born in Chowan County on October 8, 1932 and was the son of the late Haywood McKay, Sr. and Margaret Chappell Phthisic. Following graduation from high school, McKay married Audrey Keeter. After serving two years in the United States Navy, he attended Campbell College, and then returned to Edenton and managed Phthisic's Supermarket with his parents. Many people remember his summer vegetable stand and Christmas tree lot. Following the death of his wife Audrey, he married Judy Hollowell Winslow in 1984. Together they successfully operated a Perdue poultry farm for many years. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Ann, and by his sister, Delorene. Surviving are his loving and faithful wife of 30 years, Judy; and his children, Haywood McKay Phthisic, III of Clayton and Denise Parker (Johnny) of Suffolk, VA. Also surviving are Judy's children, Wanda Powers (Steve) of McKinney, TX, and Dickie Winslow (Harriet) and Scott Winslow (Sonya), all of Belvidere. Together McKay and Judy shared 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, by the Rev. Howard Sutton. A private burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the chapel service, and all other times at the residence.
