Mary Scott Hollowell

Mary Louise Scott Hollowell, 86, of 909 Chatfield Drive, Jamestown, NC, died Sunday, November 9, 2014 in High Point Regional Hospital. Mrs. Hollowell was born in the Weeksville community of Pasquotank County on August 2, 1928, was the daughter of the late Miles Wilson and Mae White Scott, and was the wife of the late Edgar Earl Hollowell, with whom she made her home in Edenton for 45 years. From 1987 to 1990, Mrs. Hollowell worked with the National Park Service at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton, and in 1990 she worked briefly at the Ocracoke National Park Ranger Station. Then in March of that year she became the innkeeper for The Crews Inn Bed and Breakfast in Ocracoke. During her 15 years as innkeeper she developed a large group of friends, both in Ocracoke, and also inn guests from all over the world, and until her death was in contact with many of them by visits, phone calls, or letters to her home in Jamestown. For that work on the island, she was made an Honorary Member of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching. A member of First Baptist Church of Jamestown, she was a member of its Joy Sunday School Class and the Senior Adult Extra Years of Zest Group. Until relocating to Jamestown some 10 years ago, she had been an active and faithful member of Edenton Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, served as President of the W.M.U., President of the Lottie Moon Circle, and Coordinator of the Nursery Department. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Lanny Earl Hollowell. Surviving are two daughters, Deborah H. Martin of Greensboro and Mary Ann Karlok and husband David of Jamestown; a brother, Clarence Scott and wife Melvia of Glen Burnie, MD; three grandchildren, Thomas Edgar Martin and Miles Clarke Martin, both of Greensboro, and Emma Josephine Karlok of Jamestown; two nieces Sue Scott Lindsey and husband Bruce, and Daviette Scott, all of Glen Burnie; and by an "adopted" son and granddaughter, Alton and Maddie Ballance of Ocracoke. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in Edenton Baptist Church by the Rev. David Brooks and the Rev. Dr. Jesse Croom. A private burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery in Elizabeth City. Friends may join the family Tuesday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home, or in the church social hall immediately following the service.
