Vernita Carol White, 58, of 115 Kevin Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, passed away Sunday, November 9, 2014 in Waterbrooke of Elizabeth City. Ms. White was born in Pasquotank County on March 6, 1956 and was the daughter of the late Vernon and Naomi James White. Employed as a teacher's assistant with J.C. Sawyer Elementary School for over 25 years, she was a member of Corner Stone Missionary Baptist Church where she was active in the Culinary, Yokefellow and Senior Usher ministries. Other memberships enjoyed were in the North Carolina Association of Teacher Assistants and the National Association of University Women. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Vernon B. White. Surviving are her daughter, Sherron Demetria White of Elizabeth City; her grandson, Mykal D. Polite; two sisters, Edith D. Sylvester (Vernon) of Elizabeth City and Debra A. White (William) of Manteo; five brothers, Charles A. White of Atlanta, GA, Tyrone T. White (Janet) of Elizabeth City, Major L. White of Buffalo, NY, Jerome A. White and Anthony L. White, both of Elizabeth City; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. A celebration of life service will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in Corner Stone Missionary Baptist Church, by the Rev. Dr. Walter L. Smith, Jr. and Rev. Ernest Cole, Jr. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may join the family Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and other times at the residence.
