Leslie Evans "Monk" Hughes, Jr., 75, of 110 Long Lane, Edenton, NC, died Wednesday, November 19, 2014 in Duke University Hospital, Durham. Mr. Hughes was born in Bertie County on October 22, 1939, and was the son of the late Leslie Evans, Sr. and Tildie Harrison Hughes. Retired from Commercial Ready Mix after 40 years of employment where he had worked as plant manager, retail sales manager and as a truck driver, in earlier years he had also been employed with Gilliam Brothers Hardware in Windsor. A member of Capehart's Baptist Church, he served as a deacon and on the building and improvement committee, and sang in the choir. Following 21 years of service, he retired from the North Carolina National Guard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Kenny Hughes. Surviving are his wife of nearly 54 years, Lois Toler Hughes; a daughter, Frances Swain and husband Alex of Edenton; a sister, Patricia Hughes Cullipher; a brother, Johnie Hughes, both of Windsor; and three grandchildren, Aaron, Evan, and Ashleigh Swain. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, by the Rev. Charlie Lanier. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
