Doris Mae Sutton Hughes, 94, of 311 Park Avenue, Edenton, NC, died Monday, December 1, 2014 in Chowan River Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Hughes was born in Chowan County on August 22, 1920, and was the daughter of the late Willie Seth and Maggie Ward Sutton. Retired after 23 years from Rick's Laundry, she was a member of Edenton Baptist Church and its Mary Bethany Sunday School Class, the American Legion Auxiliary, and had volunteered at the Chowan Hospital Gift Shop and the Edenton Clothing Closet. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Perry Hughes; her daughter and son-in-law, JoAnne and Bill Pierce; her son, Willie Crayton Hughes; her sisters Gwendolyn Smith and Mary Edgar; and by her brother, William Leonard Sutton. Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Emma Waff Hughes of Burgaw, NC; five grandchildren, Chuck Pierce and wife June, Keith Pierce and wife Nicole, Charlene Curtis and husband Mike, Kevin Hughes, and Karen Goodson; ten great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery by the Rev. David Brooks. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, is handling arrangements. Friends may join the family at her residence. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Edenton Baptist Church, 200 S. Granville Street, Edenton, NC 27932.
