Myrtle Barrow Hollowell

On Wednesday, December 17, 2014, Myrtle Elizabeth Barrow Hollowell, age 97, left her home on earth. Mrs. Hollowell was born on August 8, 1917, and was a native and life-long resident of Edenton. She had many acquaintances from the years she assisted her husband Clyde at the Triangle Restaurant, and then later at Hollowell and Blount Drugstore from whence she retired in the early 1980's. Baptized into the membership of Edenton Baptist Church at the age of 11 in 1928, she was its oldest member at the time of her passing. She was an active member of the Elizabeth City Chapter of the Matoaca Council Degree of Pocahontas. She had recently received her 60 year membership pin from Chapter #302, The Order of the Eastern Star, an honor on which she took great pride, and had also enjoyed membership for many years in the Home Demonstration Club. Her family and friends will remember her for her love of family, her compassion for homeless animals, and commitment to attending Sunday School and weekly church services. Preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Oretha Rose Barrow, brothers, Erie, Leroy, and Vernon Barrow, and by sister Olivia Dale, she also lost her beloved husband Clyde in 1983. Left to share her memories and the values she taught us are her son, Clyde Raymond "Ray" Hollowell and wife Jeanette of Yorktown, VA; her daughter, Karen Hollowell Turner and husband Robert of Zebulon and Edenton; grandchildren, Julie H. Kopczynski and husband Steve of Grafton, VA, Pam Hollowell of Yorktown, Leslie T. Hilliard and husband Jeff of Fuquay-Varina, and Susan T. Neff and husband Greg of Pittsboro; great-grandchildren, Hunter Kopczynski, Haley K. Steverson and husband Jimmy, Davis Neff, and Jennifer Hilliard; and one great-great-grandson, Wesley James Steverson. We will say good-bye to our loved one and friend one last time on Friday at 11:00 a.m. in Edenton Baptist Church. The service will be officiated by the Rev. David Brooks. Friends may visit with the family immediately following the service, after which there will be a private burial in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, is handling arrangements, and online condolences may be made at www.millerfhc.com. Flowers are welcomed, or contributions in her memory may be made to Edenton Baptist Church, 200 S. Granville Street, Edenton, NC 27932, or to the Tri County Animal Shelter, 138 Icaria Road, Tyner, NC 27980. The family deeply appreciates the many friends who have blessed her with countless acts of kindness; prayers, cards, calls, and visits. They also appreciate the support of staff at Edenton Primetime and the loving and generous care givers of "A Wing" of Chowan River Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Our remembrance of your love for her will keep the joy of her spirit alive.
