Harry Michael Whelan, 67, of Hertford, NC and a long time resident of Point Pleasant Beach, NJ died peacefully, Wednesday, December 31, 2014 in his home surrounded by his family. Mr. Whelan graduated from Brick Township High School and Monmouth University and later went on to attend the National Academy for Police Officers at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA. A veteran, he served in the United States Navy from 1968 to 1971. Mr. Whelan joined the Brielle NJ Police Department and rose to the rank of Chief of Police. Memberships enjoyed included the Brielle Uniform Police Association, the PBA 50, the Monmouth County Chiefs of Police Association, and the Monmouth and Ocean County Detectives Association. He moved to Hertford, NC in 2007. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his wife, Nancy Brunner Whelan, his son, Major Glen C Whelan, USAF, and daughter-in-law, Christine Leigh Whelan, his two granddaughters, Lillian Catherine, age 3, and Zoe Michael, newborn, all of Yorktown, VA, and his many friends. A true gentleman, he will be missed so very much by all his family and friends. A private gathering will be held.
