James Benjamin "Ben" Brickhouse, 68, of Kitty Hawk, NC, died Saturday, February 7, 2015 in Vidant Medical Center, Greenville. Mr. Brickhouse was born in Tyrrell County on March 4, 1946, and was the son of the late Charlie Edward and Gladys Godwin Brickhouse. Retired from the US Marine Corps "Semper Fi" having served in the Vietnam War, he received numerous medals and citations, including the Purple Heart and Vietnam Service Medal. A truck driver for a total of 38 years, he had worked both with Old Dominion Truck Lines, and had owned and operated his own business for 25 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Vaddis Twiddy, Evelyn Sexton, and Dora Everett, and by two brothers, Harvey and Harley Brickhouse. Surviving are his wife, Stella Louise Spruill Brickhouse; stepchildren, Tonya Ayers, Amanda, Carlos, and Christopher Cross, all of Roper; a daughter, Shelia Varner of Columbia; five grandchildren, Eric, Curtis, Latrisha, Brianna, and Kaylyn; 10 great-grandchildren who dearly loved him, Kaitlin, Laila, Tristan, Delainey, Kyra, Carter, Ava, Addie, Hunter, and Lucas; and many nieces, nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 14th at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton. Military honors will be accorded on the lawn of the funeral home. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the service, and all other times at the family's residence at 3981 Pea Ridge Road, Roper, NC 27970.
