Norene Umphlett Taylor, 96, of 209 Lee's Mill Road, Gates, NC, died Wednesday, February 11, 2015 in Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va. Mrs. Taylor was born in Gates County on October 17, 1918, and was the daughter of the late Mills Edward and Lucy Eure Umphlett. A homemaker, she had been a member of Reynoldson Baptist Church for nearly 70 years, was faithful in the works of its W.M.U., and also enjoyed membership in the Home Demonstration Club through the Gates County Extension Service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Millard Richard Taylor, Sr., by sons, Nelson and Phillip Taylor; by sisters, Ruby Rountree and Cordis Dudley; by brothers, Milton, James, Randolph and Leon Umphlett; and by a grandson, Scott McClenny Pierce. Surviving are three daughters, Brenda Perry and husband John Ethwell of Gatesville, Nancy Hill and husband Tommy of Smithfield, Va., Peggy Pierce and husband DeWitt of Hobbsville, a son, Richard Taylor and wife Lillian of Suffolk; a daughter-in-law, Vickie Taylor of Eure; four sisters, Lois Lawrence, Marian Spivey, Faye Hoffler, and Alta Gray; two brothers, Ralph Umphlett and M.Q. Umphlett; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Rev. Cody Brinkley and the Rev. Billy Presley. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, and other times at her residence.
