John Edward Bembridge, Sr., 85, of 8977 Mackey's Road, Roper, NC, died Thursday, February 12, 2015 in his home. Mr. Bembridge was born in Chowan County on August 23, 1929, and was the son of the late James W. "Jimmy" and Cora Whitfield Bembridge. In earlier years he worked as a welder at Newport News Shipbuilding, for 10 years with Norfolk & Southern Railroad, and then retired as a supervisor in the oiling dept. at Weyerhaeuser in Plymouth after more than 38 years of employment. A member of Holly Neck Church of Christ, he also attended Scuppernong Church of Christ, and was a member of Plymouth Masonic Lodge. An Army veteran of the Korean War, he had received the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Japan Occupation Medal. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers Charlie, James, and Dowe Bembridge, and by a sister, Pearl Cullipher. Surviving are his wife of nearly 64 years, Agnes Louise Smith Bembridge; a daughter, Jo Ann B. Davenport and husband Gordon, and a son, John E. Bembridge, Jr., all of Roper; two sisters, Lena Mae Haislip of Smithfield, VA and Brenda Lee Pineda of Chesapeake, VA; two granddaughters, Kimberly Graham and husband Aubrey and Kelly Scott and husband Ray; and three great-grandchildren, Greyson and Ava Graham, and Jaidyn Scott. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, by the Revs. Thomas Biggs and Cleve Edwards. Military rites will be accorded in the chapel and a private burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery.
