Carlton Eugene Copeland, 78, of 1016 Copeland Lane, Tyner, NC, died Monday, March 30, 2015 in Carolina House of Elizabeth City. Mr. Copeland was born in Chowan County on January 10, 1937, and was the son of the late Jessie Carl and Lillian Boyce Copeland. A graduate of Chowan High School, he had worked as a service technician with Virginia Natural Gas for 40 years before retiring in 1995. A member of the Ryland Ruritans, before moving to Tyner he had also been a member of the Chesapeake Volunteer Fire Dept. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Gladys Copeland Lane. Surviving are two sons, William Carl "Billy" Copeland and wife LaDonna of Tyner and Michael Eugene Copeland of Harbinger; a step-son, Jay Phillips and wife Becky of Tyner; three granddaughters, Ashley, Amanda, and Sara; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his special friend and companion, Alice Spivey of Elizabeth City. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, by the Rev. Tom Mercer. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery.
