Shirley Marian Mara

Shirley Marian Mara, of Hertford, NC, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, April 14, 2015 in her home. A native of Sayreville, NJ, she attended St Mary's High School in South Amboy, NJ where she met her future husband. She received her RN after completing her education at Jersey City Medical Center and then followed her spouse for the next thirty years as he served in the US Navy. An operating room nurse, she had worked in New London, CT, Charleston, SC, Hawaii, Washington, DC and retired from Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk, VA in 2004. Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, George Mara; her son, Michael Mara and his fiancé Stephanie Bradshaw of Virginia Beach, VA; two sisters, Arlene Lasch (Richard Perry) of Providence Forge, VA and Joyce Kostrzewa of East Windsor, NJ; a special sister-in-law, Donna Swiderski (William) of Egg Harbor Township, NJ; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to acknowledge the special care and compassion given to them by Dr. Steven Manuli, his staff, and Albemarle Hospice during their time of need. Services will be private.
