Penny Jo Powell Binns, 55, of 206 North Broad Street, Edenton, NC, died Tuesday, April 14, 2015 in Vidant Medical Center, Greenville. Penny was born on October 17, 1959, in Chowan County and was the daughter of Evelyn Harrell Powell of Edenton and the late Henry Allen Powell. A graduate of Peace College and East Carolina University, she had formerly taught at John A. Holmes High School, grades 9-12, and served as the school's first Computer Science Instructor. A faithful member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where she had served as Junior Warden on its Vestry, she also enjoyed membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of nearly 26 years, Harvey Livingston Binns, III; and her brother, Henry Harrell "Bud" Powell and wife Shirley, and their sons, Hoskins and Harrison, all of Edenton. Penny was "Mom" to Harvey's children, Kaycee Binns and husband Lindsey Dowell of Atlanta, GA, Harvey L. "Chip" Binns, IV of Columbia, SC, Susan T. Reynolds and husband Jeremy of Fayetteville, and Ian C. Binns and wife Anne of Charlotte. Together Harvey and Penny shared five grandchildren, McLean, Aidan, Ian, Eloise, and John. A graveside memorial service will be held Friday at 4:00 p.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Jim Reed. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, is assisting the family with arrangements.
