Marjorie Phelps Ambrose, passed away peacefully on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2015. Mrs. Ambrose was born on June 4, 1928 in Washington County and was the daughter of the late Claude Chester and Goldie Clifton Phelps. Retired after many years with Centura Bank, she was a faithful member of Hertford Baptist Church, and as long as her health permitted, was active in its Sunday School. Community involvement included volunteering with the annual Indian Summer Festival, the Chamber of Commerce, and the American Cancer Society. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Ava Dawn Phelps; and by her husband of 70 years, Arel Leo Ambrose. Surviving are her daughters, Peggy Sharon Ambrose and Nannette Dawn Ambrose, both of Hertford; and her brother, Dwight Clifton Phelps and wife Jewell of Swoope, VA. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be officiated by the Rev. H. Gene Boyce and the Rev. Gregory Clark. A private inurnment will follow in the family columbarium in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the chapel service.
