Stancil Van Davenport, Sr., 87, of 1522 Glen Eagles Court, Nashville, NC, died Tuesday, June 16, 2015 in Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. Mr. Davenport was born in Chowan County on June 15, 1928, and was the last surviving of 21 children born to the late James Alton and Mary Brickhouse Davenport. The retired owner and operator of Stancil's Bi-Rite Market in Hertford, he was a former member of Bethlehem Church of Christ in Hertford, and more recently had attended Ebenezer Pentecostal Holiness Church in Nashville. Other memberships include the Masonic Lodge, the Khedive Shrine Temple, and charter membership in the Shrine Mini Motors Patrol Corps. In his retirement years he enjoyed volunteer work, working the second Wednesday of each month at "Compassion Café", and the third Wednesday for "Meet the Need", both organizations involved in community meals and support. In addition to his parents and siblings, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Stancil V. Davenport, Jr., and by his wife of 68 years, Barbara Ann Chappell Davenport. Surviving are his daughter, Stacy Davenport-Baird and husband Richard of Nashville; his son, Eugene C. Davenport and wife Linda of Cofield; five grandchildren, Bobbi Jean Davenport, Amy Askew, Ginger Davenport, Matthew Davenport, and Brittney Gregory; and seven great-grandchildren, Kirk Davenport, Clint Davenport, William Davenport, Landon Perry, Rylan Perry, Kayleigh Perry, and Bailey Davenport. A private graveside service was held in Beaver Hill Cemetery in Edenton. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 20th, at 12 noon at Ebenezer Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1452 First Street Extended, Nashville, NC 27856, by the Rev.
