John Wood Miller, Jr.

John Wood "Bubba" Miller, Jr., formerly of the Weeksville community, died Tuesday, June 16, 2015 in Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation, Elizabeth City, NC. Born on February 23, 1942, he was the son of the late John Wood, Sr. and Ruth James Miller. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Miller Gurganus Sawyer, all of whom were loved and missed by him greatly. A veteran, he took pride in serving his country as a member of the Army, then the National Guard for many years, and finally in the Coast Guard Reserve. He enjoyed most outdoor activities, especially hunting and fishing, and valued the time spent with his friends and family, and could spin a yarn with the best of them. Surviving are his brother, Robert James "Bobby" Miller of Elizabeth City; two nieces and a nephew, Janet Gurganus of Kill Devil Hills, John Gurganus and wife Perry of Camden, and Jill Magee and husband Rich of Greenwich, CT; 10 great-nieces and nephews, Christina Floyd, Shelly Bateman and husband William, Emily and Ashley Garner, Margo, Marie, Brooke and Summer Gurganus, and Ryland and Savannah Magee; three great-great-nephews, Travis Floyd, and Blayne and Easton Bateman; his long-time neighbor and friend, Johnny Ray Allen; and other extended family members and friends who fondly recall their times with him. Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 1909 West Main Street Ext., Elizabeth City.
