Alton Paige Hobbs, 85, of Hertford, NC, passed away, Tuesday, June 16, 2015 in his home where he was surrounded by his family. Paige was born August 25, 1929 in Hobbsville, NC, and was the son of the late Dozier and Beulah Hollowell Hobbs. A 1948 graduate of Hobbsville High School, he joined the United States Air Force in 1950 and was stationed at Albrook Air Force Base located in the Panama Canal Zone until 1954 where he received a National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. Paige went on to graduate from Universal Television School in Kansas City, MO in 1956. On April 13, 1957 he married the former Mary Ellen Kennedy in Kansas City. Paige was the owner/operator of Hobbs Radio & TV in Sunbury, NC, where he provided sales and service throughout the region for more than 30 years. He really enjoyed working, loved his former customers and being around people and only retired recently from a part-time job at Albemarle Plantation. An avid fisherman, he would often be seen on the waters of eastern North Carolina. He was very devoted to his family. Paige grew up in the Hobbsville community and attended Hobbsville Baptist Church where he became a member and subsequently joined Beulah Baptist Church where he was ordained a deacon in 1971. Most recently he was a member of Burgess Baptist Church where he also served as a deacon and sang in the choir. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Mary Ellen Hobbs; a daughter, Susan Elaine Hobbs of Elizabeth City; two sons, Alton Paige Hobbs, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, and Jonathan Edward Hobbs and wife Mary Stallings Hobbs and their two sons, Kyle Dozier Hobbs and Trent William Hobbs, all of Sunbury. Paige was the youngest of eight children and was, in addition to his parents, preceded in death by his siblings, Cortez Hobbs, Harvey Hobbs, Hight Hobbs, Serlie Hobbs, Mae Belle Chappell, Frances Turner, and Elliot Hobbs. A celebration of life service will be held Friday, June 19, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in Hobbsville Baptist Church, 405 Hobbsville Road, Hobbsville, NC, 27946, and will be officiated by the Reverends Bill Thorn and Tim Dannelly. Military honors will be accorded in the church. A private burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service, and other times at the home of Jonathan and Mary Hobbs, 609 Bosley Road, Sunbury, NC 27979.
