R.C. Kennington, II

Ralph Craven "R.C." Kennington, II, 70, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2015. R.C. was born in Portsmouth, VA on June 27, 1945, and was the son of the late Ralph Craven and Dorothy King Kennington. After serving in the National Guard, he worked in the maintenance department at Union Camp Corp. and Farmer's Chemical before starting his own business in 1972. His hard work, determination, and leadership made his company, Harrellsville Metal Works, Inc. into the successful, upstanding business it is today. R.C. had served on the Hertford County Planning Commission and on the Board of Directors of Southern Bank in Winton. R.C. enjoyed a full life with many interests. An avid fisherman, hunter, skeet shooter, and golfer, the same competitive nature he exercised in business surfaced in those hobbies as well, and was evidenced by his winning several state championships in Skeet Shooting, and his achieving the title of Licensed Boat Captain. An infectious personality that developed special friendships in his business and social life, R.C. will be the subject of stories and memories that will bring smiles and sometimes tears to his family and friends for many years to come. Left to cherish his memory are his son, Ralph Craven "Trey" Kennington, III and wife Julie of Harrellsville; step-son, Kirk Nixon and wife Tina of Camden; three grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild; two sisters, Craven Porter and husband Keith of Streetsboro, OH and Margaret Moser and husband Mike of Lexington; a brother, Johnny Kennington and wife Susan of Como; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Funeral services will be held Monday at 4:30 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, by the Rev. Walter Johnston. A private burial will follow in the Bunch Family Cemetery in the Selwin community of Gates County. Friends may join the family Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home, and all other times at Trey and Julie's home, 133 Archer Town Road, Cofield. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Harrellsville United Methodist Church, or to one's favorite charity. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.millerfhc.com.
