Horace Abel Cohoon, 87, of 1164 Ocean Highway N., Hertford, NC, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 3, 2015. Mr. Cohoon was born on April 21, 1928 in Tyrrell County and was the son of the late Otis B. and Alma Inez Cohoon. A graduate of Columbia High School, he later attended East Carolina University before joining the United States Army and serving during the Korean War. Retired after 30 years with the North Carolina Wildlife Commission, he and his wife later owned and operated Old Hickory Antiques next to their home. Raised in the fellowship of Gum Neck Freewill Baptist Church, after moving to Perquimans County, he joined and became a faithful member of Hertford Baptist Church where he taught RA's, coached basketball, sang in the Adult Choir, and was president of the Men's Bible Class. Other memberships included the Perquimans Masonic Lodge and the American Legion Post #126. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Derek Berry. Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 61 years, Nanette Jones Cohoon; two daughters, Joan C. Harrell and husband Joe of Hertford and Patsy C. Berry and husband Tony of Elizabeth City; two sons, Eric Cohoon and wife Marci of Pauley's Island, SC and Alex Cohoon of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Inez Beck of Virginia Beach, VA and Jane Rhodes and Grace Combs, both of Chesapeake, VA; seven grandchildren, Cristin Winslow and husband Justin, Joshua Harrell and wife Randi, Dustin Berry, Allie Berry, Jordan Dahl and husband Ryan, Sam Cohoon, and Gracie Cohoon; and three great-grandchildren, Colten, Adler, and Vera. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in the annex of Hertford Baptist Church by the Rev. Gregory Clark, pastor. Military honors will be accorded. A private burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery, with Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, handling arrangements. Friends may join the family immediately following the church service on Wednesday, and all other times at the residence.
