John Wilbert Askew

John Wilbert Askew, 80, of 203 Bedford Court, Portsmouth, VA, died Tuesday, July 7, 2015 in his home. Mr. Askew was born in Gates County, NC on April 19, 1935, and was the son of the late Josh and Gladys Askew. Retired from the Naval Aviation Depot in Norfolk, he was a member of Eure Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Harrell Askew; and infant daughter, Alma Kay Askew; his sister, Myrtle Izon; two brothers, Thurman and Linwood Askew; and by his friend and companion, Patsy Forehand. Surviving are two sons, John F. Askew and wife Karen, and Harvey W. Askew, all of Portsmouth; nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Eure Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Wayne Proctor. A private burial will follow in the family cemetery. Friends may join the family in the social hall of the church immediately following services.
