Doris Jean Cale Kern, 70, of 809 Badham Road, Edenton, NC, died Saturday, July 25, 2015 in Vidant Chowan Hospital. Mrs. Kern was born in Chowan County on February 19, 1945 and was the daughter of the late Grover D. and Effie Bunch Cale. A retired beautician and the owner of Doris Jean's Beauty Shop, she served the customers she loved for 50 years, working both in her shop and also cutting hair at the US Coast Guard Station in Elizabeth City. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Rachel Simpson and husband Red, and by her brother, Douglas Cale. Surviving are her husband of 33 years, Richard C. Kern, Sr.; her daughter, Kim Baker and spouse Gaye Morgan of Greenville; her sister-in-law, Barbara Cale of Roper; nieces Vickie Simpson, Carol Deaver, and Lynn Bassett; and by her nephew, Wayne Cale. A memorial service will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. in Macedonia Baptist Church by the Rev. Bob Young. Friends may join the family Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and all other times at the residence.
