Dorothy Mae Mann Davenport, 87, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2015 at Chowan River Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Edenton, where she had her family by her side. Mrs. Davenport was born in Tyrrell County on May 5, 1928, and was the daughter of the late David Moses and Frances Phelps Mann. After graduating from Creswell High School she married her husband, the late William J. Davenport. During their married life they made their homes in Washington, NC, Washington, DC, Norfolk, VA, and in Creswell. A homemaker and mother of eight children, she was a faithful member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church where she served on many of its committees, was the custodian for over 25 years, and gave of herself in any way needed. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Evaine Davenport Bumgardner, and by a daughter-in-law, Norma A. Davenport. Surviving are her children, Bill Davenport (Angie) of Creswell, Wayne Davenport (Anita) of Edenton, Glenda Rose (Joe) of Suffolk, VA, Marshall Davenport (Pam) of Creswell, Melody Whitley (Bobby) of Tarboro, Jean Furlough (Kenny) of Creswell, and Kim Slaymaker (Chris) of Tarboro; sisters, Katie Phelps of Franklin, VA, Mary Spear of Creswell, Shirley Walker of Corapeake, and Starlyn Ambrose of Creswell; a brother, John Mann of Tennessee; 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church with the Reverend Susie Fitch-Slater and the Reverend Tom Hallberg officiating. A private burial will follow in the Davenport Family Cemetery. Friends may join the family Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and all other times at the home of Bill and Angie Davenport in Creswell.
