Phillip Wayne Coltrain, 67, of 1078 West Millpond Road, Roper, NC, died Wednesday, July 29, 2015 in his home. Mr. Coltrain was born in Martin County on December 6, 1947, and was the son of the late Archie Thomas and Elizabeth Sexton Coltrain. In earlier years he had worked as a carpenter, also with the North Carolina Dept. of Transportation, and then later retired from the NC Dept. of Corrections in the maintenance of the Tyrrell Prison Work Farm. He had attended Edgewood Baptist Church in Windsor, and was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Coltrain. Surviving are his wife of 18 years, Eloise Hassell Coltrain; two sons, Christopher Scott Coltrain and wife Wendy of Roper and Troy Brandon Coltrain and wife Leslie of Columbia; two brothers, Jimmy Coltrain and wife Sylvia of Pantego and Tommy Coltrain and wife Lois of Plymouth; and his sister-in-law, Sheila Coltrain of Farmlife. Also surviving are Eloise's children, Sharon H. Lewis, and Bryant Hassell and wife Angie, all of Roper. Together Phillip and Eloise share seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Roper Pentecostal Holiness Church. Friends may join the family at the residence.
