W. Crafton Matthews, Jr.

Walter Crafton Matthews, Jr., 76, of 124 W. Grubb Street, Hertford, NC, died Thursday, August 13, 2015 in his home. Mr. Matthews was born in Perquimans County on October 19, 1938, and was the son of the late Walter Crafton, Sr. and Ililda Ainsley Matthews. A retired insurance agent, he was a member of Hertford United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, W. Crafton Matthews, III. Surviving are his wife of nearly 58 years, Nellie Ruth Harrell Matthews; a son, Kevin Matthews and wife Clarice; a sister, Marta Colson and husband Freddie, all of Hertford; three grandchildren, Jennifer Matthews Smith, Walter Crafton "Matt" Matthews, IV, and Faith Olivia Matthews; six great-grandchildren, Bishop Joel Smith, Lia Sky Smith, Jalyn Rose Smith, Deacon Cole Matthews, Maddox Crafton Matthews, and Isabella Grace Matthews; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, by the Rev. James Spaugh. A private inurnment will be in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the service, and all other times at the residence.
