Jimmy Godwin

James Carl "Jimmy" Godwin, 73, of 177 Cottonwood Drive, Hertford, NC, died Monday, August 17, 2015 in Vidant Medical Center, Greenville. Mr. Godwin was born in Perquimans County on November 8, 1941, and was the son of the late Carl S. and Vercha Umphlett Godwin. The retired owner of Jim's Body Shop, he later worked with Reed Oil Company in Hertford, and was a member and deacon of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lou Jordan. Surviving are his wife of nearly 52 years, Gail Layden Godwin; two sons, Dennis Godwin and fiance` Barbara Holser of Nashville, TN and Keith Godwin and wife Debbie of Grandy; his sister, Freda Nelson and husband Wallace of Hertford; and two grandchildren, Kala and Alex. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in Mt. Sinai Baptist Church by the Rev. Howard Sutton. A private burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service on Thursday, and all other times at the residence. Flowers are welcomed, or contributions in his memory may be made to the building fund of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, in care of John Mansfield, 801 W. Grubb Street, Hertford, NC 27944.
