Hubert A.J. Byrum, 91, of 629 Happy Home Road, Tyner, NC, died Wednesday, September 16, 2015 in his home. Mr. Byrum was born in Chowan County on November 4, 1923, and was the son of the late James Rufus and Ira Elizabeth "Lizzie" Dail Byrum. Retired after 16 years as the Maintenance Supervisor with the Chowan County School System, he also for many years worked with his brothers in Byrum Brothers Construction. A member and deacon at Happy Home Pentecostal Holiness Church, he was a charter member of the Ryland Ruritan Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Frederick A. Swain, Sr.; by an infant sister; and by his brothers, James, Morale, Ruby, Jesse, Wayland, Preston, and King George Byrum. Surviving are his wife of over 70 years, Miriam Twine Byrum; a daughter, Charlene Swain of Tyner; four sons, Hubert L. Byrum of Rosenberg, TX, Bernard L. Byrum, Sr. and wife Judy, and Bobby L. Byrum and wife Jerry, all of Tyner, and Ronnie L. Byrum, Sr. of Mammoth Springs, Arkansas; 12 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Happy Home Pentecostal Holiness Church and will be officiated by the Rev. Tommy Oliver and Johnny Byrum.
