John Mack Smith, 70, of 345 NC 32 North, Sunbury, NC, died Thursday, October 8, 2015 in Wake Med, Raleigh, NC. Mr. Smith was born in Johnston County, NC on April 23, 1945 and was the son of the late Madison Cozart and Bessie Maude Byrd Smith. A retired US Army Master Sergeant, he proudly served his country for 21 years, and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. After retirement from the Army, he was an officer with the NC Dept. of Corrections for 14 years. A member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church, he also enjoyed membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Sandra Hudgins Smith; a son, William Cozart Smith and wife Anne of Four Oaks, NC; a sister, Brenda Gale Pindell, also of Four Oaks; a brother, Johnnie Ray Smith of Wrightsville Beach; and two granddaughters, Tiffany Nicole Smith and Brianna Leigh Smith. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Philadelphia United Methodist Church, Sunbury, and will be officiated by the Rev. Steven Hall, pastor. Burial with military honors will follow in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family Saturday from 7 to 8 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, and all other times at the residence.
