Edythe Payne Reed

Edythe Payne Reed, 91, of 516 South Edenton Road Street, Hertford, NC, died Saturday, November 21, 2015 in her home.

   Mrs. Reed was born in Forsythe County, NC on January 12, 1924, and was the daughter of the late Harold Burton and Elsie Vaughan Payne. A faithful member of Hertford United Methodist Church, she enjoyed the fellowship of the Ladies Circle and working in the annual church bazaar.

   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three children, infants Karen Kay Reed and Durward Felton Reed, III, and by Nancy Reed Winslow Riddick.

   Surviving are her husband of over 70 years, Durward Felton Reed, Jr.; a daughter, Judy R. Spear (J.C.) of Elizabeth City; two sons, Robert Lindsay Reed (Deborah) and Gary B. Reed (Jo Ann), all of Hertford; a son-in-law, Roger Riddick of Hobbsville; a sister, Marjorie Livengood (David) of Thomasville; a brother-in-law, Lindsay Reed (Virginia) of Raleigh; two special cousins, Mildred and Ray Grubbs, both of Richmond, VA; seven grandchildren, Angela Spear Cobb (Jim), Heather Higgins (Brian), Kristy L. Reed, Robbie Reed (Amber), Jason Winslow, Brad Winslow (Kristy), and Brandon Winslow; seven great-grandchildren, Kelley and Carey Stancil, Dylan and Maci Higgins, Trenton Reed, and James and Lucas Winslow; and a special canine pal, "Sparky".

   Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in Hertford United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jane Leechford. Friends may join the family in the fellowship hall immediately following the church service, and all other times at the residence. A private burial will be held in Cedarwood Cemetery.

   The family wishes to express their appreciation to caregivers Cami, Melvia, Tina, Sandy, Joyce, and Trudy, and to the other caregivers who have assisted them.

   Miller & Van Essendelft, Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, is assisting the family with arrangements.
