Leslie Yates Kirby, 80, of 100 South Oakum Street, Edenton, NC, died Friday, November 13, 2015 in his home.
Mr. Kirby was born in Perquimans County on December 17, 1934, and was the son of the late Tracy Roscoe and Elizabeth Yates Kirby. A licensed electrical contractor, he owned and operated Kirby’s Electrical, and had taught Electrical Courses at The College of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City. A retired Lieutenant Colonel with 32 years of service, he had served in both the active and reserve components of the Army, and in the North Carolina Army National Guard. He was a member of Edenton Baptist Church, the Edward G. Bond Post #40 of the American Legion, Unanimity Masonic Lodge #7, and the Sudan Temple of the Shrine.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by twin grandsons, Dustin Ryan and William Roscoe Kirby; by a brother, Tracy Kirby; and by a sister, Joyce Kirby.
Surviving are two children, Rhonda Kirby Charles and husband Cameron of Jacksonville, FL and Paul Kirby of Wanchese, NC; three grandchildren, Justin Hunter Kirby, stationed at Vilseck Army Base in Germany, Alyssa Brianne Kirby of Richmond, VA, and Dylan Joseph Charles of Jacksonville, FL; a sister, Betsy King and husband Dan; and a brother, Jimmy Kirby, all of Edenton.
A graveside memorial service with military honors will be held Saturday, November 28th, at 2:00 p.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, is assisting the family with arrangements.
